Dr Melanie Leng

I am the Chief Scientist for Environmental Change Adaptation and Resilience at the British Geological Survey, and Science Director of the Stable Isotope Facility, part of the UK’s National Environmental Isotope Facility (NEIF). I also lead the Centre for Environmental Geochemistry, a collaboration between the University of Nottingham and BGS, and hold the Chair of Isotope Geosciences in the School of Biosciences at the University of Nottingham.

With a background in isotope geochemistry, my research focuses on using stable isotopes to understand environmental and climate change over geological and recent timescales. I work across a range of disciplines, from geology and hydrology to archaeology and biology, applying isotopic techniques to reconstruct past environments, trace geochemical processes, and support environmental resilience.
